| Alzheimer's Disease The Disease Alzheimer’s disease causes a gradual loss of brain cells and is the leading cause of dementia. Symptoms of dementia include loss of memory and language skills, disorientation and an overall decline in the ability to think, reason, and learn. Individuals with dementia often experience anxiety, depression, and hallucinations. Incontinence, sleep disturbance, wandering, and aggression (physical and verbal) are symptoms that create additional challenges for the caregivers. Although several FDA approved drugs (including Namenda & Aricept) mask the early symptoms of the disease, currently there is no cure for Alzheimer's Disease. The Statistics An estimated 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer's Disease and 1 in 3 Americans know someone with the disease. In the next 40 years, the number afflicted with the disease is expected to reach 12-16 million. Those afflicted with Alzheimer's Disease live an average of 8 years after diagnosis, with some living for as many as 20 years or more. National annual costs (direct & indirect) of caring for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease are estimated to exceed $100 Billion. Yes, $100 Billion! According to the 1/8/2007 Business Week Online article by Catherine Arnst entitled "Decoding Alzheimer's"... "There are currently 4.5 million Alzheimer's patients in the U.S., and the direct and indirect costs of caring for them total more than $100 billion a year, making Alzheimer's the third most expensive illness after heart disease and cancer. Yet the federal government budgeted only $645 million for Alzheimer's research for 2007, $7 million less than the prior year. In contrast, $2.6 billion was allocated for research into HIV/AIDS, which afflicts one million Americans." The Family Caregiving for someone with Alzheimer's can consume the caregiver's life, often resulting in anxiety, depression, and a decline in health. In most cases, 24-hour care is necessary, resulting in a huge time and financial burden for the afflicted individual's family. Once the spouse has used up all but the last of their financial resources, the financial burden falls on Medicaid, and thus the American taxpayers. |
